Reclaimed Wood Furniture Vs. Antiques: Aesthetics, Style & Material October 21 2014, 0 Comments
It is a common misconception that reclaimed wood furniture is antique furniture that has been refurbished. Reclaimed wood furniture is actually custom built using reclaimed wood, and can take on many different styles including Steampunk, industrial, modern or classic - to name a few.
We thought it would be helpful to discuss some of the characteristics and differences between reclaimed wood furniture and antiques.
Antiques Must be Aged & Authentic
In order to be considered an antique, an item has to be at least 100 years old. An antique can be anything from a piece of jewelry to a chair -- and everything in between. Collectors seek out antiques from various eras and categories, and will pay outrageous prices for authentic items.
Antique furniture comes in every possible era and is cherished for its history, design style and outstanding workmanship. When you consider these items are over 100 years old, it truly is amazing to think of their history as well as the skill and care involved in their creation. Most antique furniture was individually made at the hands of truly skilled artisans; that's what makes antiques so attractive.
Reclaimed Wood Furniture - Old Material, Fresh Design
Reclaimed wood furniture uses wood that has been reclaimed, then is used to create newly designed furniture. It could be sourced from any number of places -- it could, in theory, be antique wood. However, the main difference between antiques and reclaimed wood pieces is that the final product crafted using the reclaimed wood is a new piece.
A major similarity between reclaimed wood pieces and antiques is that they are both hand crafted using traditional methods... meaning that each piece is one-of-a-kind. With reclaimed wood, pieces are created using wood that is perfectly aged, meaning that it's conditioned and extraordinarily strong and durable. The combination of skilled workmanship in with perfectly aged wood materials makes reclaimed wood furnishings highly desirable.
